Phoenix Veterinarian Clinic
Treating Sick Cats and Dogs
Sick animals are not happy animals, and you aren't likely to be a happy owner of a sick pet either. Getting them well is going to be on the top of your list when your pet is sick, and our Phoenix veterinarians are here to help you do just that. You may bring your pet to our clinic at the first sign of illness or you may decide to attempt to cure them yourself. If you choose the latter option, take note of these "sick pet tips."
When dogs and cats get sick, they usually exhibit many of the same symptoms that are found in sick humans. For example, a pet that has a loss of appetite, sleeps more often than usual or just isn't "acting right" could have some type of illness. Pets may also vomit or experience uncontrolled diarrhea when sick, as well. In short, if you know how to know if a human is sick (such as yourself) then you are probably not going to have much trouble figuring out if your pet is sick.
If you suspect your cat or dog seems to be sick, consider taking their temperature. This should be done rectally in these animals because they can't be trusted to not chew on a thermometer that is placed in their mouth. The normal rectal dog temperature is 99F to 102.5F. A normal rectal temperature for a cat is 100 to 103F. If your cat or dog is outside of these ranges, you may have one sick puppy (or kitten).
Dogs with diarrhea can be treated by putting them on a 24 hour fast and allowing them a limited amount of water. Diarrhea is going to dehydrate your dog so you must still give them water. However, you want to be sure you're giving them "just enough" to properly function, and not so much water that it continually floods their system and makes them have more diarrhea. After the 24 hours, feed your dog controlled portions of white rice. This will soak up stomach acids and excess water in the stomach, while hardening their stool.
Cats can be put on a fast also in order to cure diarrhea with a limited amount of water for the same reasons. But after your cat has been fasting for 24 hours, mix canned pumpkin into their food. This will soak up excess stomach fluids and harden their stool.
If these tips don't cure your animal's illness, bring them into our Phoenix veterinarian clinic. We love all pets, regardless of size, weight, breed, etc. Come in or call us today and we'll get your pet squared away.
