Pet Carriers – What to Look for and Why

If you like to travel with your pets, you need to invest in a pet carrier. Pet carriers can be found at your local pet store or by contacting our Phoenix veterinarian clinic. When purchasing your pet carrier, it is important to be sure that you get the one that meets all of your needs and is comfortable for your pet to spend extended periods of time in. After all, you could be flying them across the country in their pet carrier at some point, so the pet does need to be relatively comfortable inside the carrier.

Pet carriers are tools that help you transport your pet without incident. They are small portable cages that are suited for household pets. They come with many different features and options, so it is very possible to make your pet's carrier comfortable. If you choose a pet carrier that doesn't come with helpful features, consider laying a blanket in it for your pet, especially if it's chilly outside. Of course, a heavy blanket will make your pet very hot in the summer, so a sheet should be used when it's hot outside. Regardless of the season, this extra level of comfort will be much appreciated by your pet while it is caged up during the trip.

If you travel by car most of the time, then you don't have much to research before buying your first pet carrier. It needs to be large enough for your pet to move around and switch sides so that they don't get bed sores and feel quite so cramped inside the cage, and it needs to be small enough to fit into your vehicle in a secure spot. For example, you will want to place the pet carrier either on a seat with a seatbelt holding it in place, or on a floorboard where it is not likely to be able to move around. If you have a back seat, consider placing the pet carrier on the floor between the back seat and one of the front seats. By wedging the pet carrier in place, you will ensure that your animal doesn't end up being tossed around if you are forced to hit the breaks.

If you like to travel by plane, then you need to check with your airport to find out what restrictions they have on pets and pet carriers. Airports are very strict these days, and if your pet carrier or pet isn't the type they allow, they are not going to make an exception for you. Call them before you buy the carrier just to be sure you're investing wisely.
