Adopting a New Dog or Cat
Adopting a new dog or cat is one of the most exciting times for anyone. You're anticipating getting your new pet, playing with it, learning about it, and watching it learn about you and its new home. You're planning to buy toys, ceramic food and water dishes, stuffed toys, maybe some yarn or a tennis ball for the pet to play with – it's a fun time.
However, you need to be sure that you are well prepared for your pet's arrival, and this means purchasing the necessities and a few toys before your pet arrives at your home.
Pet Food
Decide now if you want your new pet to eat canned (wet) or dry pet food. Wet is going to be more expensive but your pet will enjoy it more. Dry pet food is cheaper than wet, but your pet won't like it as much as they would wet pet food – but they won't know the wet pet food exists if you don't introduce them to it. What you feed your pet depends largely on your own priorities.
Waste
It's best to choose now how your pet will dispose of its waste. If you are adopting a dog, decide what times you plan to walk it. If you're adopting a cat, pick out its litter box and litter and have it all ready when the cat gets there. In fact, you should walk your dog as soon as it arrives, or introduce your new cat to its litter box as soon as possible.
Toys
Be sure to buy plenty of toys for your new pet to play with. The pet will be busy checking out their new home when they first arrive, but when the newness wears off they'll need something to do. Pick up a few toys to occupy their time.
